ICDI (Italian Computing and Data Infrastructure) is a forum created by representatives of major Italian Research Infrastructures and e-Infrastructures, with the aim of promoting sinergies at the national level, and optimising the Italian participation to European and global challenges in this field, including the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), the European Data Infrastructure (EDI) and HPC.
ICDI provides the national research community with opportunities to discuss and negotiate common strategies for the participation in the Digital Single Market and the EOSC, in order to optimise and coordinate the Italian contribution to these initiatives. In order to understand the state of the art in this field, we mapped the Italian participation in pan-European Research Infrastructure and e- Infrastructure programmes. This assessment is intended as a first step to understand the feasibility and the extent of the coordination and, possibly, the federation of common resources.
In the long term, our vision aims to create a national coordination body that is representative of Italian infrastructures and interact with national and European institutions on their behalf. As of today, ICDI is regulated by a MoU signed by Area Science Park, CINECA, CNR, Elettra Sincrotrone, ENEA, GARR, INAF, INFN, INGV, OGS, SISSA, Università di Milano-Bicocca and open to the participation of other organisations.
The Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) follows this initiative as an observer.
In view of the participation as a founding member in the EOSC Association, upon MUR's mandate, ICDI is undergoing the process of acquiring a legal personality, in the form of a temporary association (Associazione Temporanea di Scopo according to the Italian law). While the process to incorporate the association is completed, GARR was designated to officially represent ICDI.
